BACOLOD CITY -- Ceres Negros succumbed to JPV Marikina, 0-2 in the second of their Philippines Football League (PFL) back-to-back matches at the Panaad Stadium here Saturday night.

Former Ceres-La Salle striker J Baguioro scored the opening goal in the 59th while Kennedy Uzoka sealed the win for the visitors in the 89th minute.

In the first half, Ceres goalkeeper Louie Michael Casas got a red card for an intentional handball outside the box.

Ceres coach Risto Vidakovic substituted forward Takumi Uesato for keeper Eduard Sacapano, leaving the hosts with 10 men.

Casas’ sending off and a missed penalty by Stephan Schrock proved costly for Ceres as JPV Marikina took advantage of it and went on to dominate the second half.

Baguioro, who was named Man of the Match, said he is glad and feels blessed to score against Ceres.

“Ceres is very strong. We just tried to win the game. We just worked hard, and I was lucky to score the first goal for our team,” said the Negros-born standout during the post-match interview.

JPV Marikina assistant coach Frank Muescan credited his players for their professionalism and sacrifices.

“This is an unforgettable day for us especially for the players. I admire them. Instead of bucking down, we managed to sustain (the play) until we got the three points. They gave their best,” he added.

Meanwhile, Vidakovic said it was difficult for the team to play for more than 60 minutes with one player less.

“It’s very hard for the players, but I’m still proud of them. They fought. We missed the penalty. It was really a bad day for us today. We have to forget it and think about the next game,” the Ceres mentor said.

In their face-off last Wednesday, Ceres Negros prevailed over JPV Marikina, 4-1, even with only 10 men after forward OJ Porteria was sent off.

With the loss, defending champion Ceres Negros remained with 35 points, but still at the top of the standings. JPV Marikina now has 13 points for the fifth place.

Kaya FC Iloilo, after defeating Davao Aguilas, 4-3, earlier on Saturday took the second spot with 26 points. (PNA)
