GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – This city is set to open two new day-care centers within the year to augment its 65 established day care centers.

City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) head, Rebecca Castillo Generoso, said Wednesday the new day-care centers would be located in Manggahan, Tinungan village, and in Santiago village.

“The Manggahan day-care center is just a replacement of the existing day-care center, which the city is renting right now, while construction (of the day-care center) for Santiago has yet to start,” Generoso said.

She also said that the city has the most number of regular, permanent day-care workers, who are “receiving salaries from Salary Grades 6 to 7, and other benefits.”

The CSWDO, acting on directives from Mayor Antonio Ferrer - who chairs the local council for the protection of children (LCPC)- is working closely with other city offices as it continuously updates and upgrades its policies and facilities to retain the “Child-Friendly” seal the city has received for four consecutive years.

Generoso credits the city’s officials, local council, health officials, school heads, police through the Women and Children Protection Unit, the day-care workers, civil registrar, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), barangays and youth organizations for tirelessly initiating and providing the needed policies, facilities, city ordinances, and resolutions pertaining to the welfare of children.

“These are the backbone of our activities and plans, which without our Mayor’s support will not prosper,” she added.

The City, represented by Generoso, was among the awardees of the 2017 Seal of Child-Friendly Local Governance at the Regional Awarding held at Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City, Quezon last Monday.

The award was given by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Council for the Welfare of Children after the local government units (LGUs) were assessed and had passed the audit conducted by the Provincial Council for the Protection of Children. The results were submitted to DSWD 4-A (Calabarzon).

It is an annual and regular assessment done to every LGU to see to it that the functions of the council are performed and LCPC plans and activities are done.

The assessment is also to monitor the use of funds of every LGU in terms of children's welfare. (PNA)
