MANILA -- Astoria Hotels & Resorts (AHR) has inaugurated its newly-completed PHP1.5-billion Astoria Current in Boracay Island after getting clearance from the government.

Astoria Current is among the first resorts that were allowed by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to return to its operation in Boracay after the island was closed for six months for rehabilitation.

“We at Astoria Hotels & Resorts are proud to welcome guests to the renewed, revived Boracay Island at Astoria Current. We are one with the government in advocating for and implementing a more environment-friendly stay in the island so that Boracay will continue to be enjoyed by the future generations,” AHR President Jeffrey Ng said.

As rehabilitation of the island was on-going, AHR managed to complete the Annex building of Astoria Current. The resort is now offering 205 rooms for tourists, making Astoria Current as the biggest resort in terms of room numbers in Boracay’s Station 3.

Ng explained that Boracay's closure posed manpower deployment challenges to enterprises in the island, and their company was no different. However, Astoria Current’s employees were reassigned to other Astoria properties particularly in Palawan and Ortigas during the rehabilitation of Boracay.

In 2017, around 2.1 million tourists in Boracay.

The island was closed by the government in April 2018 for a six-month rehabilitation which ended October last year. (PNA)
