CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan– Governor Daniel R. Fernando has warned the public to stay vigilant amid the life-threatening dengue virus and despite the reported low cases in this province this year as compared in 2018.

Based on the data released Friday by the Provincial Health Office-Public Health (PHO-PH), there are 3,163 suspected dengue cases from January 1 to July 27, 2019, with eight dengue-related deaths recorded compared to 3,440 cases with 10 dengue-related deaths reported from the same period of the previous year.

Fernando said Bulakenyos must continue to be vigilant against the disease, which can be fatal without prompt medical treatment.

“We should not be complacent but instead should take the lead in maintaining environmental hygiene to eliminate dengue-carrying mosquitoes,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, PHO-PH head, Dr. Jocelyn Gomez reiterated the importance of the 4S strategy to fight dengue --search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites; secure self-protection measures like wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and daily use of mosquito repellent; seek early consultation; and support fogging/spraying only in hotspot areas where the increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.

According to the Department of Health, dengue is transmitted through a bite of dengue-infected Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes, which lay eggs in any container that holds clear and stagnant water like a bottle cap, dish dryer, gutter, trash can, and old rubber tire, among others.

The mosquitoes usually bite between two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset and can be found inside and outside the house. (PNA)
