DAVAO CITY -- A civic organization has called on Dabawenyos to donate blood to fill the demand for blood as dengue cases rise in the city.

Lawyer Teresita Yñiquez, president of the Rotary Club of Waling-waling, made the call in a press briefing Monday, where she also bared the group's "One Rotary, One District Bloodletting Activity" on August 12, 2019.

Rotary club past president Dr. Mae Dolendo, who is also an oncologist of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) and president of House of Hope, said the blood donation drive at the Metro Davao Medical and Research Center is timely with the increasing number of dengue cases.

The Department of Health-Region 11 earlier reported that in Davao Region, a total of 15 deaths were recorded due to dengue from January 1 to July 17, with about 3,000 monitored cases.

This city registered the highest number of cases at 1,630 followed by Compostela Valley province with 701 cases and Davao Oriental with 24.

"The conduct of the bloodletting activity is just a coincidence with the increase in dengue cases but it is important that we are ready," Dolendo said.

On the other hand, Dolendo said that the bloodletting will also help cancer patients at the House of Hope for a steady supply of blood.

She said the daily need at House of Hope for cancer patient children is at three to five bags daily for RBC and platelets, and when they undergo the operation. (PNA)
