LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A total of 28 teams will see action in the 9th edition of the Cordillera Volleyball Developmental League for Elementary and Secondary School (CVODLESS) that kicked off at the Benguet State University Wednesday here.

The Baby Jaguars of the University of the Cordilleras High School (UCHS) returned to defend their titles in possibly another show of force in the sport that they have dominated in the past three years.

In 2018, the Jaguars won in the girls junior, girls open and boys open.

This season, however, the boys' team will not play.

The juniors division will be for Grades 7 to 10 or the junior high, while the open will include the senior high, said league organizer and founder Danilo Eduardo.

Up to end the UCHS domination in the juniors girls are against BSU Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS) Hope Christian Academy (HCA) and San Jose High School (SJHS), all from this town and Baguio team Kaizen City High School, University of Baguio Science High School (UBSHS) and Baguio City High School (BCHS).

The open girls division has a big crowd of 11 schools that include Benguet schools like the Tublay School of Home Industry (TSHI), BSU-SLS, HCA, Sablan National High School (SNHS), and San Jose High School (SJHS), all from this town.

The Baguio schools for the open girls division include former powerhouse BCHS, Saint Louis Aurora Hill, Saint Louis Center, Baguio Central University, ABCamp and UCHS rival UB High School.

Eduardo said five teams will see action in the boys junior: SNHS, BCHS-A, BCHS-B, San Jose HS, and SNHS Freshmen.

To see action in the boys open are TSHI, SNHS, BCHS, BCU, and UBHS.

Last year, the UCHS needed three sets to beat UBHS for the open division after winning both the 15-under and junior girls titles by defeating Hope and UBHS, respectively.

Then, the UCHS open boys squad took the crown.

The UCHS went on to win the Palarong Panlungsod titles to represent the city in the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA), which they won.

The UCHS girls team also won the Northern Luzon Akira Volleyball Championship to represent the region in the national finals won by Bacolod’s Taytung High School.

Meanwhile, Eduardo announced the first season of the Atty. Johnny Waguis Volleyball League will be staged in this town from October 19 until November 24.

Waguis, the newly-elected Benguet vice governor, has been supportive of the CVODLESS program as he bankrolled free volleyball clinics in several Benguet towns that started early this year.

Eduardo said free clinics have been staged in this town and the towns of Tuba, Itogon, Sablan, Kapangan and Tublay, to name a few.

He said with Waguis as supporter, they will also stage free clinics in the remaining Benguet towns soon as CVODLESS continues to develop the grassroot, which is one of the league’s aims. (PNA)
