LEGAZPI CITY – The Albay Provincial Police Office (APPO) recorded a 51-percent decline in crime incidence from March 17 to May 20 this year compared to the same period last year.

Capt. Dexter Panganiban, Albay police spokesperson, said crime cases dropped to 482 from 979.

“However, for non-index crime, it was observed that crimes under this category have risen significantly mainly due to violations committed with regards to the enforcement of the enhanced community quarantine to combat the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic,” he said in an interview on Sunday.

For non-index crimes, Panganiban said 343 cases were recorded during the current period, a 29-percent increase compared to 266 cases recorded last year.

Crimes under non-index include enforcement of special laws such as ECQ guidelines, illegal logging, illegal fishing, illegal gambling, narcotics, traffic violations, violence against women and children, fraud and forgery.

The report also indicated that Index crimes cases dropped by 69 percent with only 39 cases recorded from 127 cases last year.

Theft led with 18 cases; rape, eight; robbery, six; physical injuries, four; carnapping, one; and homicide with only two cases, it said.  (PNA)
