CEBU CITY – In support of the campaign against illegal drugs of Philippine National Police chief Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas, the top police official here said 50 police personnel from different stations underwent a surprise drug test on Thursday.

Col. Josefino Ligan, chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said the number of police personnel subjected to mandatory surprise drug test is now 570, almost half of the 1,020-strong police force in the city.

Although the drug test for cops has been a regular program, Ligan said they are stepping up their “internal cleansing” now that the nation’s police force is led by Sinas, who formerly headed the Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7).

The CCPO chief said of the 570 who have submitted themselves to a surprise drug test, only one personnel tested positive for drug use.

However, the cop assigned to a Drug Enforcement Unit contested the result and submitted himself to a confirmatory test, he said.

Meanwhile, the policeman has been disarmed and placed under camp restriction at the CCPO headquarters in Camp Sotero Cabahug while his administrative case is still pending.

Ligan assured that by yearend, all the police personnel assigned in the city would have been tested already.

“To all the police out there, you already know the commitment of our PNP chief in eradicating illegal drugs. He was our PRO-7 director so we know how unequivocal Gen. Sinas’ stance against illegal drugs (is),” he said. (PNA)
