CEBU CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) in Region 7 (Central Visayas) recorded a total of 992 patients who recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) for the whole month of January.

DOH-7 data showed that since the onset of the health crisis, the region logged a total of 23,887 recoveries on Jan. 31, which is 4 percent higher than the 22,895 recoveries listed on New Year’s Day.

However, the number of new Covid-19 cases is increasing, which the DOH-7 considered to have been triggered by a “post-holiday surge”.

Dr. Jaime Bernadas, DOH-7 regional director, noted a slower recovery rate in this capital city of Cebu. However, its 418 recoveries account for 42 percent of the total 992 recoveries in the region for the whole month of January.

On the other hand, the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue reported 114 and 66 recoveries, respectively, last month.

Cebu province excluding the major cities had 323 recoveries in January which represents 32 percent of the regional tally. Bohol had 35 recoveries last month, while Negros Oriental had 31. Only five recoveries were logged in Siquijor for the entire month of January.

Bernadas said Cebu City topped the list of localities in the region that had the highest total number of recoveries at 10,442, which is 44 percent of the 23,887 total regional tally recorded on Jan. 31.

After the capital city is Cebu province with 6,822, followed by the two cities of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, with 2,628 and 2,570, respectively.

Bohol had 803 recoveries and Negros Oriental had 594. Siquijor had 28 at the end of January.

The region logged a total of 3,526 active cases in January with this city leading the list. (PNA)
