DUMAGUETE CITY – Police personnel arrested Negros Oriental’s first “violator” of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban in Barangay Talungon, Bais City on Monday night.

A police report identified the suspect as Arnel Apatan Dumahel, 32, of Sitio Medalla, Barangay Calasgaan, who was arrested shortly after he allegedly evaded a joint Comelec-police-military checkpoint in Talungon.

Bais City police personnel were conducting the checkpoint along the national highway when they spotted the suspect who suddenly disembarked from his motorcycle a few meters away and fled.

The police put up a chase and arrested him in the same village.

Seized from him were a caliber .45 Colt MK IV handgun, five live ammunition, and a steel magazine.

Also recovered was his Yamaha motorcycle.

The suspect has been detained as charges for violation of the Comelec gun ban and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition are being readied against him.

The election period officially began on January 9, also the day the Comelec gun ban took effect until June 8. (PNA)
