PALO, Leyte – Key officials in Leyte province will support the presidential bid of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla said on Thursday night.
"He is from Leyte and if he wins, he will always put Leyte as one of his priorities. It is good if we are united for the improvement of Leyte,” Petilla said.
Talking to reporters, the governor said the majority of mayors in the province and his brother, Jericho, a gubernatorial candidate, have agreed on a consensus to support Marcos.
The Petillas picked Marcos despite rift with the Romualdezes in the past.
Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez and Leyte 1st district Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez are first cousins of Marcos.
Jericho, a former governor and energy secretary is eyeing to replace his younger brother, Leopoldo Dominico in this year’s polls.
All incumbent mayors in Leyte are allies of Petilla, whose family has been ruling the province since 1992.
Leyte, with 40 towns and three cities, has 1.3 million registered voters per records of the Commission on Elections.
The province is considered the bailiwick of the Marcoses.
In 2016, he was the top choice for Vice President.
His mother, former first lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos is a native of Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte province. (PNA)
