MANILA – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Northern Samar on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 105 km. northeast of the municipality of Mapanas at 2:33 p.m. It was 38 km. deep.

Phivolcs logged the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity III: Mapanas and Palapag, Northern Samar
Intensity II: Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar; Prieto Diaz and Bulusan, Sorsogon
Intensity I: Legazpi City and Tabaco, Albay; Mercedes and Daet, Camarines Norte; Pili, Camarines Sur; Hernani and Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Hilongos, Dulag, Kananga, Abuyog, Alangalang, and Baybay, Leyte

There were no reported intensities in the Phivolcs' earthquake bulletin posted at 2:42 p.m.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are likely but damage is not expected from the magnitude 5.9 quake. (PNA)
