ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Ministry of Human Settlement and Development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MHSD-BARMM) unveiled a PHP40 million housing project in Lamitan City, Basilan province on Thursday.

The project in Barangay Balobo, consisting of 50 housing units, is known as the Roseville Darussalam Housing Settlement Project.

“It is a joint project of Lamitan City and MHSD. We purchased and developed the land while they build the houses,” Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay said in a phone interview.

Each of the two-bedroom housing units has a floor area of 70 square meters (sq. m.) built in a 120 sq. m. lot, Furigay said.

He described the housing project as a testament to his administration’s commitment with the support of BARMM to provide safe and decent housing for its constituents, who have been displaced by natural calamities.

“We understand the challenges that come with being displaced, and we believe that everyone deserves a safe and comfortable place to call home,” he said.

Furigay, together with MHSD Minister Hamid Aminoddin Barra and MHSD Director General Esmael, led the unveiling of the housing project and urged recipients of the project to take care of their new homes and to make the most of the opportunities with having a stable and secure living space.

He noted that 21 of the 50 housing units have been handed over for free, through a raffle, to qualified recipients properly screened by the city housing board.

Similar housing projects are being constructed in four other towns in Basilan that include Maluso, Tipo-Tipo, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, and Al-Barka. (PNA)
