Army chief hails Gilas Pilipinas Women for 1st win

MANILA – Philippine Army (PA) commander Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. on Thursday hailed the Gilas Pilipinas Women, whose roster includes two Army basketball players, for notching up its first win against Chinese Taipei in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2023.

The game was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Australia on Wednesday.

"(Army commander) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr. lauds the Army ballers for their outstanding performance and professionalism to excel in the world of sports as well as the whole Gilas Pilipinas Women team for their unwavering dedication to soar to greater heights in international basketball competitions," PA spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad said in a statement.

He added that the participation of Army ballers, Privates First Class (Pfc) Janine Pontejos and France Mae Cabinbin, in the ongoing FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2023 is the triumph of the entire PA and the Filipino nation.

Coming off a silver-medal finish in the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, Gilas Pilipinas Women completed their first mission to stay in Division A as they eased out Chinese Taipei 92-81 in Group B.

The Gilas Women will now shift its focus on the qualification round against the No. 1 seed in Group A, which is set on Friday. (PNA)
