LAOAG CITY – Around 500 amateur, professional, local and international runners are set to join the premiere sand dunes challenge scheduled on Saturday.

Among these are four long-distance runners from the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) whom organizers identified as Jonel Gobotia, 25, from Bicol; Christine Hallasgo, 30, from Bukidnon; Joida Gagnao, 27, from Guimaras; and Sonny Wagdos, 30, from Davao.

Hosted by the city government of Laoag, the second edition of the Laoag sand dunes challenge is a unique running event featuring 5K and 10K categories for both male and female runners, including a 5K race for kids or young participants.

The event forms part of the city's month-long celebration of Pamulinawen Festival.

"The Laoag sand dunes challenge stands out as perhaps the sole sand dunes race nationwide, attracting both local daredevils and international thrill-seekers to its distinctive setting. This year's edition promises to elevate the adrenaline to new heights,” Laoag City Mayor Michael M. Keon, a former athlete and head of the Project Gintong Alay, said.

To complement the thrill of the race, Keon said participants will have the option to try 4x4 rides and sandboarding sessions with free breakfast and accommodations for non-local residents.

Every finisher will also receive a commemorative medal and a stylish event jersey, and winners will receive cash prize of PHP5,000 to PHP15,000.

Among the 500 pre-registered participants are delegates from the Philippine National Police, Philippine Marines, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Philippine Army as well as those from the provinces of Pangasinan, Baguio, Bulacan, and Laguna. (PNA)
