ROME – Pope Francis has canceled his trip to the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, later this week following the advice of his doctors, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Tuesday.

"Although the Holy Father's general clinical picture has improved with regards to his flu-like condition and inflammation of the respiratory tract, doctors have asked him not to make the planned trip to Dubai for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change," said Bruni.

"Pope Francis accepted the doctors' request with great regret and the trip is therefore canceled," Bruni said.

He added the Pontiff would want to take part in the discussion as the latter has been waiting for the event.

"How this might happen will be worked out as soon as possible," said Bruni.

On Saturday, the Holy See Press Office said Francis was suffering from a "slight flu-like condition" but that a CT scan had yielded negative results, ruling out the risk of "pulmonary complications". (ANSA)
