Magnitude 5.9 quake jolts Occidental Mindoro, other areas

MANILA – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolted Occidental Mindoro and was felt in Metro Manila and nearby provinces on Tuesday afternoon.

The 79-km deep tectonic quake struck 7 km southeast of Lubang at 4:23 p.m.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) identified the reported intensities:

Intensity V (Strong) - Lubang, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) – Makati City, Quezon City, and Taguig City in Metro Manila; Malolos and Meycauayan cities, Obando, and Plaridel in Bulacan; Floridablanca, Pampanga; San Jose, Batangas; Tagaytay, Cavite

Intensity III (Weak) – Caloocan and Pasig cities in Metro Manila; Cuenca, and Talisay, Batangas; Bacoor and General Trias cities, Cavite; Rodriguez, Rizal; Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity II (Slightly Felt) – Marikina, Metro Manila; City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija; Lucban, Quezon; San Mateo, Rizal; Odiongan, Romblon

Intensity I (Slightly Perceptible) - City of San Fernando, Pampanga; City of San Pedro, Laguna; Mauban, Quezon.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are likely, but damage is not expected.

Meanwhile, the Manila International Airport Authority said the earthquake did not cause damage to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport's runway, taxiway and terminal facilities.

Likewise, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said no damage was reported in airports it operates across Luzon. (PNA)
