MANILA – The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Tuesday said it would deploy police officers in civilian attire and set up checkpoints to secure activities for the 38th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Feb. 25.
QCPD director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said some 1,400 police officers would be deployed to secure key venues such as the People Power Monument, EDSA Shrine, and other places of convergence in the city.
"Yung ating mga plain-clothed policemen, sapagkat ito ang siyang tumitingin sa ating mga kababayan para masigurado na walang makakahalo na panggugulo. Then magko-conduct ng checkpoints at lahat ng mga police intervention para masiguro natin na magiging maayos at mapayapa yung ating serbisyo (Our plain-clothed policemen would check on our kababayans to ensure that those out to sow chaos will not be able to blend into crowds. We would also conduct checkpoints and intervention measures to ensure that activities would be organized and peaceful)," Maranan told reporters on the sidelines of the inspection at the People Power Monument.
He said police personnel would be deployed to the People Power Monument as early as 6 a.m., to secure the program and wreath-laying rites set at 8 a.m.
“We will observe maximum tolerance at tayo naman ay walang inaasahan na magiging gulo sapagkat tayo nga ay nakikiusap sa ating mga kababayan na lalahok sa iba’t ibang aktibidad na sumunod lang tayo sa mga alituntunin na ating mga ipinatutupad na mga security measures (We do not expect any untoward incident and we are also appealing to our kababayans who would join various activities to follow the rules and regulations as well as security measures)," he added.
On Monday, the Philippine National Police said 8,500 cops would secure activities for the EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary in Metro Manila and Cebu.
Feb. 25 is not included in the list of 2024 holidays released by Malacañang.
Anti-drug accomplishment
Meanwhile, Maranan also said QCPD operatives seized some PHP8.5 million worth of illegal drugs during operations from Jan. 1 to Feb. 16.
Maranan said the amount includes 1,208.32 grams of shabu, and 2,420 grams of marijuana seized in 212 operations within the city.
These operations also resulted in the arrest of 374 suspects, he added.
All arrested suspects were charged with violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (PNA)
