DUMAGUETE CITY – Law enforcement agencies on Wednesday conducted a simulation exercise of a bomb threat scenario at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) administration building in this capital city of Negros Oriental to test their readiness and response capabilities.

Police Chief Master Sgt. Marcelo Augusto Lerio, team leader of the Provincial EOD (Explosives and Ordnance Division) and the Canine Unit (PECU)-Negros Oriental, said the exercise was in response to a request from the PPA to hold bomb threat drills in their offices nationwide following recent incidents of bomb threats in Metro Manila and some provinces.

The scenario included the evacuation and clearing of the building, searching for an explosive device utilizing K-9 sniffing dogs, and experts wearing heavy armored suits and removing "bombs" from the PPA admin building and detonating it at a safe distance to ensure public safety, he said.

The city port here was temporarily closed during the morning simulation exercise with some sea vessels anchored offshore while the bomb drill was ongoing.

The Philippine National Police took the lead while its specialized units such as PECU as well as the Coast Guard, Maritime Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office participated.

The drill was conducted after various government offices in Metro Manila and nearby provinces were disrupted by bomb threats. (PNA)
