Magnitude 5 quake hits Davao Occidental

MANILA – A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Davao Occidental on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 5 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Jose Abad Santos at 5:15 a.m. It was 169 km. deep.

Based on Phivolcs' bulletin, the following instrumental intensities were recorded:

Intensity III - Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Malungon, Sarangani

Intensity II - Alabel, Maasim, Sarangani; Digos City, Davao del Sur

Intensity I - Tupi, T'Boli, South Cotabato; Glan, Kiamba Sarangani; Matanao, Davao del Sur.

Instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Meanwhile, damage is not expected but aftershocks are possible from the magnitude 5 earthquake, Phivolcs said. (PNA)
