LEGAZPI CITY – The Police Regional Office 5 (Bicol) reported on Monday that the observance of Holy Week in the region was generally peaceful, although marred by isolated incidents of drowning and vehicular mishaps.

"The success of this year's security efforts can be attributed to the extensive preparations undertaken by PRO5 headed by Regional Director Brig. Gen. Andre P. Dizon coupled with the maximum deployment of personnel across the region," Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib, PRO5 spokesperson, said.

With proactive measures, the unit was able to uphold peace and order, allowing residents and visitors to partake in their religious observances without fear or disruption, she added.

However, despite the overall effectiveness of the security measures and continuous public reminders to remain vigilant, PRO5 recorded three fatal drowning incidents, in Camarines Norte, Albay, and Sorsogon, as well as three vehicular accidents that occurred in Camarines Sur, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Calubaquib said the drowning victims were a 25-year-old male in Tabaco City, Albay; a female minor from Manila who went to a beach in Camarines Norte; and a 26-year-old police officer in Castilla, Sorsogon.

On the other hand, there were two recorded vehicular incidents. In Del Gallego, Camarines Sur on March 28, the accident resulted in injuries to a 41-year-old male from Pasay City and a 43-year-old male from Caloocan City. In Ragay, also in Camarines Sur on March 31, three females from Naga City lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, PRO5 arrested over the weekend a high-ranking member of the New People's Army (NPA) operating in Albay identified as Ramir, also known by several aliases including Arsenio Opesa/Disoy/Andro/Domeng.

An explosive and cache of firing devices were seized from his possession.

Calubaquib added that as the summer vacation period continues, PRO5 remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of both Bicolanos and visiting tourists. (PNA)
