BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- The Aklan Jetty Port administration has set up an alternative port in the northern part of Boracay to decongest the island’s port and traffic along the main road.

The port, at the far end of Station 1 of White Beach, opened for operation Wednesday morning. It will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A rubber pontoon has been installed to serve as docking area for the sea craft of hotels and resorts in northern Boracay.

The move would cut down the number of service vehicles going to and from the Cagban Jetty Port, and hopefully reduce traffic in the island by 20 percent to 30 percent, said Niven Maquirang, Aklan Jetty Port administrator.

The alternative port will be used temporarily as the cleanup operation in Boracay is ongoing.

Traffic congestion in the tourist island is one of the problems being addressed by both local and national government agencies.

To address the traffic problem, Malay’s municipal government will conduct an inventory of all the vehicles in Boracay, said Malay Vice Mayor Abram Sualog, who also heads the Municipal Tricycle Franchising and Regulatory Board.

Earlier, the municipal government also prohibited the use of golf carts along the main roads of Boracay. (PNA)
