LAOAG CITY -- Some 417 coastal residents in Metro Gabu this city have received their five-day work pay on Thursday through the provincial government’s continuing cash-for-work (CFW) program.

During the salary distribution held here, 40-year-old Rona Sampayan, a household mom with three children, said she is thankful to receive her salary envelop as she is trying to stretch her family budget for the week.

As a first-time recipient of the CFW program, Sampayan hopes the provincial government will continue to provide work for the less fortunate ones.

Pegged at Php210 per day, the program is being implemented to selected beneficiaries in the entire province of Ilocos Norte.

In Metro Gabu, for example, the beneficiaries help clean the village streets, river banks and public school buildings for a period of five days.

Village chief Serafin Acierto said the CFW program provides a big support for the barangay, particularly in its clean and green activities.

Acierto said the program is beneficial to his constituents who are in need of additional income to sustain their daily sustenance.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) initially initiated the cash-for-work program with a total budget allocation of PHP15 million in Ilocos Norte.

Targeting the marginalized sector, or those who live in highly vulnerable areas who are often hit by typhoon, the program is now being adopted by local government units here as a way of discouraging dole out in terms of providing government support and at the same time, generating more employment to the locals.
