ILOILO CITY -- The municipality of Malay has until Good Friday (March 30) to submit a report to the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) relative to its declaration of the state of calamity when struck by Typhoon Urduja in December 2017.
RDRRMC chairperson Jose Roberto R. Nuñez, in a follow up interview Tuesday, said the RDRRMC during its full council meeting Monday afternoon sought updates about Boracay Island where one of the presenters was the local government unit of Malay.
The LGU was, however, unable to present the required data, thus the RDRRMC could not decide on its next step.
He said the RDRRMC has been tasked by Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año to conduct a validation regarding the declaration of the state of calamity. The validated report will then be submitted to the central office for appropriate action.
Nuñez said should Malay fails to submit by Friday, the RDRRMC will go to the locality and undertake the data gathering.
He added that the data are needed for the proposed rehabilitation of the island.
Meantime, the RDRRMC and the Regional Peace and Order Council will be holding a joint meeting in Boracay Island on April 3 to tackle Boracay issues.
Nuñez said they hope to “sum up their final validation report” during the joint meeting.
Famous for its fine white beach, Boracay Island is now facing a temporary closure as the government runs after violators of environmental laws after it was called a “cesspool” by President Rodrigo Duterte. (PNA)
