DAGUPAN CITY – Grade 3 and 7 pupils in public schools here will soon study the history of Dagupan City as part of their curriculum, said Mayor Belen Fernandez of this city.
This developed as two new history books featuring Dagupan’s rich history were unveiled to the public during the celebration of the 71st Agew na Dagupan (Dagupan Day) on Wednesday.
The history modules, entitled Dagupan City History Module for Grade 3 and Grade 7 respectively, were created through a collaboration between the Dagupan City Historical Culture and Arts Commission and the Department of Education (DepEd) in this city, said Fernandez in an interview.
“This is to inspire the children to continue or even surpass what the former leaders have done for the city,” she said.
Each book contains eight chapters, with 270 pages of the city's history, from its Bacnotan (the first name of Dagupan) days, up to its 70th cityhood anniversary, Fernandez disclosed.
“The modules have some questions to be answered after each topic, to make sure that the children understood the lesson,” she said.
She added that the books, which were already approved by DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, will be reproduced to be used in public schools within the school year.
“I think the private schools here should also use it since they are also part of the city,” the mayor also said.
Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Secretary Francis Tolentino, who was the guest of honor and speaker during the program, lauded the integration of the city’s history to the curriculum of the pupils.
“This is the only city I know, which gives value to history, and I must say that you (Dagupenos) are lucky,” Tolentino said.
A mass oath-taking of the elected Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials was also conducted alongside the Agew na Dagupan celebration. (PNA)
