ZAMBOANGA CITY--Public school teachers, who wish to pursue graduate studies but lacked the financial capability, can soon avail of the local government's financial assistance.

This was made possible following the City Council's approval on third and final reading of the Public School Teacher’s Scholarship Ordinance during its regular session on Tuesday.

Councilor Rodolfo Lim told the Philippine News Agency that the law provides the opportunity to qualified teachers, but have no financial capacity, to earn Masteral and Doctorate Degree for free.

“It (the ordinance) is aimed to uplift the knowledge and capability of the public school teachers,” said Lim, the author of the ordinance.

He said there will be an initial allocation of PHP4 million coming from the city government’s general fund for the implementation of the scholarship program.

He said the scholarship program, upon effectivity of the ordinance, will start with 30 slots--10 for elementary, 10 for high school and 10 for college.

The teachers who are qualified to avail of the scholarship program should be holders of a permanent position and should enroll in government universities.

Lim said each of the applicant will receive a scholarship grant of PHP20,000 for tuition and books per school year, and additional PHP10,000 per semester for two years.

He said the scholars, as a requirement, should serve in government schools for two years for every year of scholarship availed of, or for a total of four years upon earning the higher degrees. (PNA)
