TUGUEGARAO CITY -- Two pygmy killer whales were returned to the sea on Saturday afternoon, a day after they were stranded in San Vicente, Santa Ana, Cagayan, fishery officials said on Tuesday.
John Henry Centeno III, fishing regulation officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), told the media that the pygmy whales, locally known as lumba-lumba, were first spotted by Coast Guards and villagers in the area on Friday.
The whales weighed about 150 kg. each. The male whale measured 2.3-meter while the female was 2.2-meter long.
After getting help from volunteers in saving the whales, coast guards and fishery officials tried to send the whales back to the sea but they returned several times.
They decided to temporarily put the whales at BFAR in Sta. Ana town to de-stress the creatures.
Showing no wound or scratch, the whales were guided back to the sea at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Centeno said whales seldom got marooned on the shores unless due to bad weather, navigation errors and illegal fishing. (PNA)
