MANILA -- Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC) was granted the original proponent status (OPS) by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on its proposal to operate the New Bohol International Airport .
The new airport which is located in Panglao Island, is intended to replace the existing Tagbilaran Airport and is projected to accommodate around two million passengers per year.
“In line with AIC's commitment to support the Philippine government's efforts in advancing infrastructure within the country, we look forward to moving ahead with our proposal to provide a long-term solution for the operations, maintenance and future expansions of the New Bohol Airport. Our vision is to transform the New Bohol Airport into a prime example of excellence and efficiency for regional gateways,” Sabin Aboitiz, AIC President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement on Friday.
“We believe our proposal provides an expedient and comprehensive solution for the immediate and long-term needs of the New Bohol International Airport. We also remain committed and ready to support the government in its initiative to develop and enhance other regional airports throughout the country,” according to Aboitiz.
The DOTr originally hoped to inaugurate the airport by October this year. The new airport, which is reportedly under advanced stage of construction, is seen to boost tourist arrivals in Bohol province once becoming fully operational.
AIC, which is the infrastructure business unit of the Aboitiz Group, is also part of the NAIA Consortium which was granted original proponent status by the DOTr and Manila International Airport Authority on its proposal to rehabilitate and expand the facilities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
