MANILA — Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio said Gilas Pilipinas could rule out Jones Cup as part of its preparation for the FIBA World Cup.

In a press conference that succeeded the monthly meeting of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) board at the league's office in Quezon City, Panlilio, also the governor of Meralco in the board, cited the schedule of the tournament (July 12-21) as a factor that could lead to Gilas skipping it.

"It's 10 days. Masyadong matagal (It's too long)," Panlilio said, noting that Gilas will have to play consecutive games against some national teams and clubs.

Citing PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, Panlilio added, "The teams don't show their cards."

"I haven't spoken to Yeng [Guiao] yet. Yesterday, I promised the board that I still have to sit down with Yeng to really understand the program," he said.

Panlilio, however, added that a mini-tournament could be in line if Gilas indeed decides not to join the Jones Cup.

"That might be a better option," he said. "We have more control on the schedule."

The option drew inspiration from a four-game tuneup series Gilas had against Jordan and Lebanon before the fifth window of the qualifiers. (PNA)
