MANILA – The UP Scintilla Juris Fraternity scholarship program got a boost from a recently hosted golf tournament by the UP SJ Alumni Association .

Dubbed as the “7th SJ FRIENDSHIP CUP: The 2019 Hon. Lucas P. Bersamin Open” held on May 31 at the West Course of the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City, the fund-raising golf tournament ensured the continuous support to a 26-year-old scholarship program that started in 1993.

The program, which is UP SJ’s proud contribution to nation-building through education, has been supporting deserving students at the University of the Philippines.

Players representing different fraternities, namely Alpha Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Omega, Beta Epsilon, Beta Sigma, Pi Sigma, Plebians, Scintilla Juris, Sigma Rho, Tau Alpha, and UP Vanguard, and guests joined the challenging yet fun-filled tournament round of 18 holes.

A brand-new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 was up for grabs as the Hole-in-One prize at the 175-yard Hole #3.

Guests Cyril Alfred Castro and James Dichaves emerged as the Low Gross and Low Net Champions, respectively, while the following players bested the rest of the field:

Champions were Mel Adriano of the Alpha Phi Omega and guests GP Garin and Aldrick Po. First runners-up were Zardi Meliton Abellera of Pi Sigma, Simeon Marcelo of Sigma Rho, and Loy Tayao of Scintilla Juris.

Meanwhile, second runners-up were Pete Maniego of Beta Epsilon, Heber Bartolome of Plebians, and Delsi Banzali of Tau Alpha.

The 7th SJ FRIENDSHIP CUP is part of the regular activities of UP BARKADA – a prestigious group of alumni of leading fraternities in UP – with the objective of fostering goodwill, camaraderie, and peace among resident members on campus.

Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin, the first Scintillan Chief Justice, graced the event as the guest-of-honor during the awarding ceremony.

He expressed his admiration and support for the initiatives of UP BARKADA in resolving conflicts among fraternity members in UP and maintaining peace in the campus.

The tournament, which was organized by the UP Scintilla Juris Alumni Association led by Gerry Abesamis, Joseph Martin Perez and George Larracas, was a milestone event for both UP SJ Fraternity and the UP BARKADA for having the incumbent Chief Justice as the tournament’s guest-of-honor. (PR)
