TUGUEGARAO CITY -- The scenic Duba underground river and cave in Barangay San Miguel, Baggao town in Cagayan will be the launching venue of an ambitious reforestation project of the municipal government in September this year.
Baggao Mayor Joan Dunuan said the venue is a fitting site for the three-year project that will help regreen the mountains and shore up support for the town's environmental advocacy.
The place, according to her, is a tourist spot with crystal-clear water and underground caves, which have been the abode of bats.
"The reforestation there would restore the town’s forests," she added.
Dunuan said she has been receiving pledges and support from various stakeholders, who will join the municipal government in its tree-planting drive, as she noted of “the additional income” it would give to planters.
The mayor said she allotted funds for the top planters, whether individuals or groups, that are set to receive cash rewards for “excellent performance” in planting both fruit-bearing and non-fruit bearing trees.
The town has been taking care of seedlings of fruit-bearing and forest trees like mango, coconut, narra, mahogany, molave, kamagong and other species, in nurseries for the slated planting activity.
Dunuan said the planted trees will be inventoried with geo-tagging activities in cooperation with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Zoological Society of London. (PNA)
