Pagadian City joins int’l coastal cleanup drive

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – An estimated 45 metric tons of waste materials were collected in 12 coastal barangays as the city joined the observance of the International Coastal Cleanup drive Saturday.

Mayor Samuel Co acknowledged the over 1,000 volunteers who participated in the activity as part of the city’s efforts to clean the environment.

Those who joined the activity are soldiers, policemen, personnel from the national government offices, non-government organizations, and civil society groups. The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas- Zamboanga del Sur chapter also participated in the event.

“We have collected a lot and will make sure all the villages especially in the coastal areas to maintain the cleanliness of our coastlines,” Co said during the activity.

Melchor Carinel, the chairperson of the local KBP chapter, said their participation shows that local journalists do not just deliver reports but also share their time as part of social responsibility.

Held every third Saturday of September of each year, the International Coastal Cleanup Day aims to remove trash and debris from beaches and waterways, as well as raise awareness on the importance of environmental protection and conservation. (PNA)
