TEHRAN – The 18th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) is a proper opportunity for the directors of the important news agencies of the region to become familiar with the progress and the real image of Iran following the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Ali Naderi addressed the participants in the presence of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi on the second day of the 18th general assembly, which kicked off on October 24 in Tehran.
The IRNA chief underscored that the mainstream media of the world powers have tried to portray a different and distorted image of the Islamic Republic of Iran, noting that the assembly in Tehran provides heads of important Asian news agencies with an appropriate opportunity to become familiar with real Iran and be able to narrate the realities of advancement of the Islamic country following the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
So, the presence of 50 top managers of OANA news agencies in the capital Tehran provides them with a good opportunity to become aware of what is going on in the country, Naderi argued.
According to the managing director, the meeting will pave the way for enhancing cooperation among the OANA members to improve independent media outlets in order to overcome unilateral story-telling of today’s world.
He also said the OANA was established in 1961, and that the organization is composed of 43 news agencies from 35 countries.
The post-COVID era has provided a good opportunity to hold the general assembly and pave the way for finding new ways to expand cooperation and enhance the connection to public opinion in the world, he added.
IRNA hosts the 18th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), which kicked off in the capital Tehran on Oct. 24.
In the two-day assembly, around 60 senior directors, managers, and editors from 35 OANA member states discuss various topics, including the development and strengthening of media cooperation.
The general assembly is being held at the highest level of every news agency to discuss infrastructural issues; the upgrade of activities of members; macro-politics; review, reform, and ratification of agreements of the executive board and the technical and news groups; offering suggestions to the executive board and pursuing executive issues; as well as decision-making on new members.
The OANA was established to facilitate information dissemination among regional countries with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
IRNA along with Fars and Mehr news agencies are the three media agencies in Iran representing the Islamic country in the OANA.
IRNA is one of the first members of the organization and presided over it between 1997 to 2000; then, the Iranian news agency acted as the vice chairman of the regional organization in 2016, and now IRNA is a member of the executive committee of OANA.
At the end of the 18th General Assembly of the OANA in Tehran, a communique will be issued by the members on Tuesday. (IRNA)
