ANKARA – Italy’s Jannik Sinner on Sunday won the 2024 Australian Open men's singles, his very first Grand Slam title.
Sinner, the world No. 4, came back against Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, winning the final in Melbourne with 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 sets as the showdown at Rod Laver Arena lasted for three hours and 44 minutes.
During the nail-biting final, Medvedev made 57 unforced errors.
In the semis, Sinner on Friday eliminated 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia to play his first major final.
The 22-year-old Sinner became the first Italian to secure an Australian Open singles title.
"It is a special victory, an incredible tournament, two fantastic weeks: I felt at home here," Sinner said while receiving the trophy.
Medvedev offered his congratulations to the champion and said the victory was "deserved". (Anadolu)
