MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) has expressed support to the proposal of Finance Secretary Ralph Recto to ban disposable vapes.
In a statement Wednesday, the DOH said all vapes should be banned due to their harmful effects on health and the environment.
“Disposable vapes and vapor products pose significant health risks including e-cigarette or vapor product associated lung injury (EVALI), nicotine addiction, and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, among others,” it said.
Disposable vapes are electronic smoking devices made for one-time use. Hence, they are non-rechargeable and are sold pre-filled with e-liquid.
They are also made with plastic and batteries which are not easily recyclable or biodegradable.
“These items result in electronic waste (e-waste) that contains harmful chemicals that can seep into soil and water sources, posing risks to both the environment and public health,” the DOH said.
On Tuesday, Recto said most of the disposable vape products are unregistered with the Department of Trade and Industry and do not pay excise taxes.
He added they are “sold to or appeal to minors”. (PNA)
