LAOAG CITY – This Ilocos Norte capital city ruled the Region 1 Athletic Association Meet on Saturday with an overall haul of 79 gold, 53 silver and 68 bronze medals.

Laoag was also adjudged the Most Organized delegation while Candon City was Most Disciplined.

The city dominated individual sports arnis, gymnastics, taekwondo and tennis.

As champion, it will field the most number of athletes for Region 1 to the 2025 Palarong Pambansa to be hosted by the province.

Pangasinan II placed second (61-49-56), Ilocos Norte was third (52-68-58) and Ilocos Sur fourth (34-35- 43).

After landing third last year, Mayor Michael Keon said the athletes prepared harder than usual and set their sights on No. 1.

The head of the defunct Project Gintong Alay sports program during the Marcos Sr. administration, Keon said sports has always been one of his priorities.

“Our presence underscored the city government's steadfast commitment to nurturing young talents, promoting youth development through sports, and fostering a culture of excellence. This collective effort serves as a beacon of encouragement and solidarity for our aspiring athletes,” Keon said during the opening ceremony on April 22. (PNA)
