ODIONGAN, Romblon – Administrators of Romblon State University (RSU) are assessing a data breach wherein sensitive personal information was reportedly siphoned off.

The school’s management convened on Tuesday morning to assess the extent of the damage caused by a group called “DeathNote Hacker Philippines,” which managed to steal the personal information of both students and faculty members, according to online statements of RSU spokesperson Sherryll Sweetah Fetalvero.

It was also reported that the hackers were trying to expose alleged misconduct by faculty members as well as the reasons class schedules have not been changed despite the extreme heat in recent days.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the school officials could not be contacted.

Meanwhile, Marcelina Servañez, director at the Department of Science and Technology- (DOST) Romblon, confirmed the cyberattack on RSU but said the school is capable of addressing the situation with little help from outside parties.

“RSU has a well-equipped IT (information technology) department. They will know how to handle it… I’m sure they are working on it already,” she told the Philippine News Agency.

Servañez, however, said that experts from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will likely get involved to try to contain the fallout from the data breach. (PNA)
