UST forces FEU to do-or-die for UAAP men’s volleyball finals slot

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas lived to fight another day as it overcame top-seeded Far Eastern University, 25-23, 25-19, 28-26, to force a do-or-die in the UAAP Season 86 men's volleyball semifinals at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday.

The Golden Spikers finally beat the Tamaraws who swept them in the eliminations -- 28-26, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 on March 3 and 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23 on April 13.

Josh Ybañez had 15 points, 13 receptions and six digs for UST, the four-peat champion in Seasons 70 to 73.

In contrast, the Lady Tams took down No. 1 National University Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23, at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Saturday.

Second seed UST will try to clinch the first finals berth in the women’s division against fourth-ranked defending champion De La Salle at 6 p.m.

In the men’s side, second-seeded defending champion NU can end La Salle’s season at the start of their Final Four matchup on May 8, also at Smart Araneta.

On the same day, the UST-FEU (men) and NU-FEU (women) do-or-die matches will also be played.  (PNA)
