LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The municipal police station here is adopting the road usage system being implemented in major Metro Manila roads, such as designating lanes to certain types of vehicles to help address traffic congestion.
Col. Benson Macli-ing, municipal police chief, in a media interview on Wednesday, said the flow of traffic is hampered when vehicles keep on transferring lanes, thus the dry run of a system that designates the outer lane for public utility vehicles (PUVs) and the inner lane for other vehicles such as trucks carrying vegetables.
“This will prevent jeepneys from swerving to different lanes because it is also a cause of accident,” he said.
Macli-ing said that if La Trinidad’s traffic woes remain unsolved, it will affect the town’s economy.
“We have trucks carrying highly perishable goods -- vegetables from our own farmers -- and if they are delayed, it will cause damage to the goods. That is why, we have to find ways to help them,” he added.
An odd-even coding scheme is in effect in the town but there is no truck ban since this will disadvantage the trucks carrying perishable goods bound to different destinations nationwide.
Macli-ing said all road obstructions will be removed with the help of motorcycle and bicycle-riding cops.
Illegal parking is penalized with PHP500 fine for every violation.
He also said a jeepney drivers forum will be held within the week to gather inputs and recommendations from the sector. (PNA)
