Reelectionist village councilor killed in Sarangani ambush

GENERAL SANTOS CITY--A reelectionist barangay councilor was killed in an ambush during a campaign sortie on Friday morning in a village in Malapatan town in Sarangani Province.

Chief Insp. Romeo Calamba, chief of Malapatan municipal police station, said incumbent Barangay Sapu Masla councilor Haron Malagos, 47, and his wife were on their way home aboard their vehicle when waylaid in Purok Calagumit at around 10 a.m.

He said the victim died on-the-spot due to multiple gunshot wounds from an M16 Armalite rifle and caliber .45 handgun.

Malagos’ wife, Rowena, managed to jump out of the car and was unharmed, he said.

Witnesses said three to four still unidentified suspects were already waiting in the area prior to the attack.

A police manhunt has been ordered against the suspects.

Malagos is the second reelectionist barangay official who was killed in gun-related attacks in the province since the start of the election period on April 14.

On April 26, gunmen shot dead reelectionist barangay chair Reynardo Amador in Barangay Tambilil, Kiamba town in Sarangani Province. The Kiamba municipal police station filed murder charges against two suspects, identified as Salie Jamla and Jojo Dela Rosa, both residents of the same village. (PNA)
