Sarangani boxer wins featherweight title in China bout

DAVAO CITY – Sarangani’s Richie Mepranum landed more telling blows to win by a majority decision over Sen Chen of China for the vacant International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific super featherweight title at the Wynn Palace Cotai in Macau on Saturday.

Mepranum scored 97-93 and 96-94 to get an overall score of 95 from the judges.

The 32-year-old Mepranum improved to 33 wins with nine knockouts, nine losses, and one draw.

Sen suffered his second loss against 11 wins.

Meanwhile, Roland Jay Biendima of General Santos City lost by a unanimous decision to Bin Zhou of China for the vacant World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council Continental (WBC ABCC) super flyweight title at the Anshun Olympic Center in Guiyang, China on Friday.

It was the fifth loss suffered by Biedima against 13 wins and one draw.

The 27-year-old Zhou posted 11 wins against one loss and one draw. Zhou earlier beat George Lumoly of Indonesia by a unanimous decision in China on Dec. 23, 2018.

In the same event, Lingjie Xia (6W-0L-1D, 2KO) of China knocked out Attanon Kunlawong (14W-4L-0D, 11KO) of Thailand in the first round to win the vacant WBC ABCC lightweight title while Youngchao Sheng (6W-0L-1D, 4KO) of China TKO’d Ricky Manufoe (27W-36L-3D, 10KO) of Indonesia in the third round to win the interim WBC ABCC super featherweight title.

The promoters of the vent were Bob Arum of Top Rank, Li Sheng of SECA Ltd., and Xiaoping Zhang of Xiaoping Sports. (PNA)
