TACLOBAN CITY – A total of 4,438 senior high school students in Catbalogan City in Samar have received one-time educational cash assistance from the local government.

Mayor Dexter Uy, in a phone interview Friday, said the program "Ayuda Eskwela" of the city youth development council aims to support the needs of students as they adopt the new normal education.

The city government started the distribution of the PHP1,000 cash assistance on the second week of December last year and completed them early this week.

Of the total beneficiaries from the city's 57 villages, 2,572 students are enrolled in Grade 11 and 1,876 in Grade 12.

"This is part of our commitment to support the education of the youth. They could use the amount to buy things they would need for their learning. This program will also be rolled out this year," Uy said.

This is also in support of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunities for all, he added.

Catbalogan, the capital city of Samar province, is home to over 104,000 people. The city is about 112 kilometers north of Tacloban City, the regional capital of Eastern Visayas. (PNA)
