MANILA – South Cotabato's capital city of Koronadal will host the 9th edition of the Kamatyas FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Invitational tournament on June 17 at Ace Center Point.

The event, using the 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment time control format, features players from Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The champion will take home PHP30,000 while the second to fourth runners up will receive PHP10,000, PHP7,000, and PHP5,000, respectively. Fifth to 10th placers will get PHP2,000.

Kamatyas Chess Club co-founders, International Master Roderick Nava and David Almirol, are organizing the tournament cooperation with Mark John Centillo and Joselito Dormitorio. Chief arbiter is FA Byron Gabrentina Villar.

“It’s the first time that the Kamatyas FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Invitational tournament will be held in Koronadal City and it will not be the last. We’re planning to do more chess tournaments in the future," Dormitorio said on Wednesday.

“We brought here the best of the bests to show that our Mindanao chess players are capable of going up against Manila-based opponents as well Luzon and Visayas," he said.

Dormitorio said the chess community in the country continues to grow due to the continued strengthening of chess tournaments like this.

“We hope such events will inspire more young people and encourage them to improve their chess skills," he said.

Those who already signed up were Singapore-based International Master candidate Edgar Reggie Olay, Jayson Salubre, Jeriel Manlimbana, Allen Mirano, Ronald Nonles, Anthony Mosqueda, Philip John Leyson, Alexander Clavite, Elias Banquiran and Andre Miguel Jorgio. (PNA)
