COTABATO CITY -- Pursuit operations are underway for gunmen who killed late Wednesday a couple who are former members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Makilala, North Cotabato.

Senior Supt. Bernard Tayong, North Cotabato police spokesperson, identified the fatalities as Felix Abaniel, 52; and his wife Teresita, 51, both of Purok 7, Barangay Singkatulan, Makilala.

Tayong said heavily armed men barged into the house of the couple around 10:30 p.m. and shot them both using .45-caliber pistols and M16 rifles.

“The couple died on the spot,” Tayong said, adding that the perpetrators escaped to an undisclosed direction after the incident.

He said the couple’s former NPA comrades could be behind the incident, citing that the couple has been active in convincing colleagues in the mountains to come down and rejoin the mainstream society for they are fighting a futile cause.

The couple surrendered to military authorities earlier this year. (PNA)
