MANILA -- The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has expressed its dismay over a stabbing incident in Olongapo City over the weekend.

A video footage that went viral on Sunday showed a player apparently stabbing a referee wearing an SBP uniform during a barangay league game the night before.

The game official still ran a few hundred meters to safety but eventually fell to the ground due to several stab wounds.

"The SBP condemns such act of violence which definitely has no place in basketball and in sports," said SBP executive director Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios in a statement on Tuesday.

Barrios said Gil Cortez, the SBP director for Region 3, has already extended his assistance to the injured referee while already meeting with local officials on the legal actions that will be slapped on the player, who reportedly surrendered to the police after the incident.

"We trust that there will be no repetition of the ugly incident and we call on the basketball community to simply play and support the game according to its merits at all times," Barrios said. (PNA)
