MANILA -- Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday confirmed that Malacañang has formally approved the appointment of Nicanor Faeldon as Director General of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

In a message to newsmen, Guevarra said "Nicanor Faeldon’s appointment papers as director general of the BuCor have been signed by the president and ready for release by the Executive Secretary (Salvador Medialdea)".

Guevarra said Faeldon has also asked to take his oath before him, after which he can assume the post.

Last week, the justice chief confirmed that Civil Service Commission (CSC) Chairperson Alicia dela Rosa-Bala completed its favorable recommendation for Faeldon's appointment as director-general of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Assistant Secretary Melvin Buenafe has been designated as officer-in-charge in the meantime to handle the day-to-day operations of the bureau.

The BuCor, which exercises supervision over the country's penal facilities including the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, is under the Department of Justice (DOJ).

President Rodrigo Duterte named Faeldon as BuCor chief, replacing retired Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

Prior to being appointed BuCor chief, Faeldon was designated Office of the Civil Defense deputy administrator.

Faeldon resigned as Customs Commissioner amid the controversy on the PHP6.4-billion shabu shipment which slipped past the bureau. (PNA)
