‘Bising’ leaves P163-M damage in agriculture

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday reported PHP163.36 million in damage due to Typhoon Bising (Surigae).

According to the DA-Disaster Risk and Reduction Management (DRRM) data, some 3,353 farmers with 4,826 hectares of agricultural areas in the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas were affected by the weather disturbance. The volume of production loss reached 9,774 metric tons (MT).

Affected commodities include rice, corn, assorted vegetables and fruits, livestock, fisheries produce and facilities, and agri-infrastructures. These values are still subject to validation.

Meanwhile, the DA said that due to early advisory issued prior to the entry of the typhoon, a total of 14,589 hectares planted to rice have been harvested from Regions V, VIII and XIII with an equivalent production of 59,543 MT valued at PHP1.08 billion.

As for corn, a total of 534 hectares have been harvested from Region V and VIII with an equivalent production of 1,411 MT amounting to PHP18.20 million.

The DA has a stockpile of 18,478 bags of rice seeds, 12,539 bags of corn seeds, and 1,640 kilograms of assorted vegetable seeds ready for distribution to affected farmers.

For financial assistance, the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) offers Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program. There are also available funds from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to indemnify affected farmers. (PNA)
